This week marks a historic moment for Paris: the long-awaited reopening of Notre-Dame.
After years of restless restoration following the tragic fire in April 2019, our iconic cathedral is once again ready to welcome visitors.
The restoration wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible dedication of skilled artisans and the unmatched expertise of French craftsmanship. It’s truly something to be proud of — or, as we say in French, “cocorico!” (a playful nod to our national symbol, the rooster).
But Notre-Dame de Paris reopening is just the beginning. Paris is a treasure trove of remarkable churches, each with its own story to tell and beauty to admire. Let me take you on a little tour of some must-see gems beyond the grandeur of Notre-Dame.
Discovering the Churches of Paris
Sainte-Chapelle
Step inside this Gothic jewel, and you’ll be mesmerized by its stained-glass windows that transform sunlight into a kaleidoscope of colors. It’s like standing inside a rainbow — a truly unforgettable moment. Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and soak in the magic of this place.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés
Known for its royal blue ceiling and historic charm, this church is a feast for the eyes. Even better,
it’s located just across from two legendary cafés, Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore — perfect spots for a café crème and croissant, or even a glass of wine post-visit.
Saint-Sulpice & Saint-Eustache
While these churches are more understated in design, they come alive during light shows and candlelit concerts, creating an ambiance that’s absolutely magical.
Sacré-Cœur
Perched atop Montmartre, this basilica offers breathtaking panoramic views of Paris. If you’re up for it, climb the 292 steps to the top of its dome for an even more spectacular vista. While I find its architecture and interior slightly austere, the peaceful atmosphere inside is truly soothing.
Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont
Nestled beside the Panthéon, this church is home to the reliquary of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. Film lovers might also recognize it from Midnight in Paris — one of my favorite films about the city! Its stunning jubé and intricate interior make it a must-see.
Tour Saint-Jacques
Did you know that all that remains of this former church is its majestic Gothic tower? It’s a poignant reminder of Paris’ layered history. And if you climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with yet another stunning view of the city.
Basilique Saint-Denis
Just beyond the borders of Paris lies this Gothic masterpiece, famous as the final resting place of the kings and queens of France. Walking through its royal tombs is like stepping into the pages of French history.
Beyond Notre-Dame de Paris reopening: A City of Faith and Architecture
Paris is a paradise not just for Christians or those with a spiritual connection but also for anyone
who appreciates stunning architecture and rich history. Whether you’re marveling at intricate stained glass, exploring candlelit halls, or simply admiring the craftsmanship of centuries past, the beauty of these sacred spaces leaves a lasting impression.
